Abstract Smart cities, with their integration of interconnected technologies, are on the forefront of urban development. However, this connectivity introduces a myriad of vulnerabilities, making smart city infrastructure susceptible to various attacks and threats. This paper investigates the landscape of vulnerabilities, attacks, security challenges, and threats faced by smart cities and proposes a novel framework, smartVAST, leveraging blockchain technology to fortify the security of smart city ecosystems. The background study explores the intricacies of smart city components, highlighting existing vulnerabilities and threats. The paper provides a comprehensive overview of blockchain technology, emphasizing its potential in addressing security concerns. Through an in-depth analysis, it examines the integration of blockchain into smart city domains, presenting a holistic approach to enhancing security. The smartVAST framework is introduced as a strategic tool for evaluating and mitigating vulnerabilities, attacks, security gaps, and threats in smart cities. Case studies and results showcase the practical application of the framework, illustrating its efficacy in real-world scenarios. The paper concludes by discussing future directions, challenges, and the imperative role of blockchain in shaping secure and sustainable smart cities. This research adds to the current discussion regarding the merging of deep learning and blockchain technology to enhance the development of intelligent and environmentally friendly urban spaces. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, V.
