Abstract Cities around the world are becoming smarter and more technologically advanced. We are introduced to information technology that has rendered novel possibilities to society and the economic sector, but security and privacy remain major challenges. Many possibilities and challenges are being addressed under the umbrella of managing smart cities. We concentrated on challenging solutions for new technologies, consistency, and social issues. Smart cities use modern technologies like deep learning, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), which can lead to privacy and cyber security problems including data breaches and fraudulent transactions. This chapter addresses cyber security issues in current technologies and related works on cyberattacks that specifically target IoT security in smart cities. Additionally, offers an encompassing overview of security problems and contemporary solutions in smart cities using Blockchain, a novel technology that improves data security, integrity, and accessibility in decentralized networks. Finally, we outlined the future advances in the cyber security of smart cities. The primary objective of this study is to provide an overview of the most significant issues regarding digital security and protection. In addition, it investigates digital attacks targeted at Smart city areas and cyber security issues, Smart city risks associated with security problems, and provides a detailed framework that helps academics and practitioners in investigating the research areas. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Smita Sharma, Manikandan Tirumalaisamy, Balamurugan Balusamy, Naveen Chilamkurti; individual chapters, the contributors.
