Abstract In this chapter, we designed a smart power quality (PQ) monitoring system (SPQMS) to detect and categorize PQ disturbances associated with smart city power networks using wavelet singular entropy (WSE). We simulated nine PQ disturbances using mathematical models. We analyzed PQ event with voltage using stationary wavelet transform (SWT) and computed normalized singular components of SWT coefficients; we computed WSE using Shannon entropy. We computed a disturbed index to indicate the availability of PQ events with voltage; WSE and disturbed index higher than unity indicate the availability of an event. We computed features considering the maximum WSE, which we used to classify the PQ issues applying decision rules. We established the efficacy of our proposed SPQMS by comparing performance with discrete wavelet transform and fuzzy C-means clustering.
