Abstract The cities of the 21st century not only serve as population centres but also command economic growth, innovation, and serve as epicentres for digitalization and technological advancement. They increasingly assume the mantle of ‘smart cities’. The primary focus of this chapter revolves around smart energy systems within smart cities. It delves into the intricacies of the smart city concept and elucidates the contemporary significance of cities as catalysts for innovation, progress and economic development. Moreover, it explores the various methods and tools employed to ensure that smart cities maintain secure and reliable energy infrastructures that are resilient against a broad spectrum of adversities, both natural and anthropogenic. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
