Abstract Smart cities are an integral part to accomplish urban development. The concept of smart cities evolved simply to come up with a framework of how to create sustainable climate for urban development. Different countries have different expressions of smart cities. Although agenda being the same for urban development, identification of development segments differs due to differences in the ecosystems. India is a big subcontinent with around 17% of the world's population, in this scenario how can it better its smart city mission (SCM) delivery. The following article connects the dots of how the smart city mission is in India and what issues boost and plague the development to make India more sustainable in its tireless effort for creating a better urban development climate. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
