Abstract The future vision of a smart city is to provide better and cleaner facilities for the general public. Smart subterranean infrastructure is a crucial component to take into account while building a smart city. Monitoring the drainage system is essential to maintaining the cleanliness and health of the city. Due to the incompetence of manual monitoring, drainage issues are handled slowly and take longer to resolve. The system uses a wireless sensor network made up of sensor nodes to mitigate all of these problems. The suggested system is a real-time, IoT-based, low- maintenance system that sends a message to the managing station if a manhole breaches a set of threshold values. In addition to helping the public, this technology lowers the risk of mortality for manual scavengers who clean the subterranean drainage system. The most important element in daily living is water. India has declared plans to create 100 smart cities. A smart city must take into account a number of factors, including smart transportation, smart electricity, and smart water. Since underground drainage systems are installed in the majority of Indian cities, it is critical that these systems function properly to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and health of the city. The pure water could become contaminated with drainage water and spread infectious diseases if the drainage system is not maintained. © 2024 IEEE.
