Abstract The evolution of smart sensor technologies has profoundly influenced the proliferation of digital twins, facilitating their widespread deployment across diverse domains such as intelligent manufacturing, smart cities, automotive, and healthcare. The advent of the metaverse, poised as the next-generation Internet, has catalyzed the convergence of sensors, the metaverse, and digital twins, giving rise to the transformative concept of the digital twin metaverse. This chapter elucidates the pivotal role of the digital twin metaverse in enhancing decision-making processes, optimizing resource utilization, and elevating overall quality of life, thereby fostering the development of sustainable smart cities. The seamless integration between physical and digital realms empowers users to navigate effortlessly across both domains. Illustratively, the chapter presents a use case demonstrating the application of digital twins for low-carbon and energy-efficient management within smart cities.
