Abstract Communication technology in the 21st century has rapidly evolved and produced various intelligent networking models, among them the “Internet of Things (IoT)”. This innovative concept is comprised of a network of technologies that involve diverse protocols, infrastructures, data storage systems, and communication methods within the realm of Information Technology (IT). The devices in IoT must have the capability to independently process and interchange information without human intervention. These IoT systems have the potential to create extensive distributed applications that encompass numerous interacting services, such as homes run smartly, healthcare monitoring, smart city planning, utilities, agriculture and animal farming, security and emergencies, smart water management and industrial control, and smart transportation. Standardized Communication Protocols are used to achieve secure and efficient data transfer due to the huge amount of data handled and generated by the IoT’s communication networking. These protocols ensure access control to data through authentication techniques and maximize resource utilization by utilizing cryptography algorithms. IoT networks come with varying specifications and requirements; hence, different protocols are needed to suit their distinct needs. Some networks are solely used for gathering and maintaining quality data with server clients, while others are built to accommodate fast business transactions and there are also networks designed to synchronize multiple devices’ internet connectivity. To tackle potential network reliability hiccups, large-scale systems call for flexible communication mechanisms. Consequently, a one-size-fits-all approach cannot be applied when it comes to single communication protocols for IoT networks. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, T. Kavitha, M. K. Sandhya, V. J.
