| Abstract |
Advancements in technology and modernisation result in a convenient and smart living environmental ecosystem, including smart cities and smart infrastructure, with the amalgamation of the concept of Internet of Things (IoT), collected data and internet-based services and systems over different communication procedures. IoT is considered the next generation of internet services. However, general resource-constrained IoT-enabled devices, which are capable of performing a specific task, impose fresh security challenges, unauthorised access to data, node forgery and denial of services. Also, these devices are more vulnerable to being compromised by opponents compared to basic computing devices and are exposed to various types of attacks such as botnet and spoofing attacks. One of the most promising approaches for providing improvement in the security of networks lies in identification of devices. The devices identified for applications in IoT-based communication systems can be classified under two categories, explicit identifiers and implicit identifiers. Internet protocol or media access control addresses fall under the category of explicit identifiers, whereas radio signal features and network trafficking come under implicit identifiers, with the latter being more secure, robust and reliable for many IoT applications. This chapter deals with the various communication devices available on the market for performing IoT services, progressing towards a smarter society by adapting and adopting the new technological approaches in the design and configuration of IoT devices. © 2024, CRC PRESS.. |
