Abstract	Artificial intelligence (AI) evolved as a revolutionary innovation with significant potential for developing smart cities. With rapid urbanisation and the need for sustainable and efficient urban environments, AI applications offer innovative solutions to various urban challenges. This chapter puts forth a compendious review of AI applications in smart cities, highlighting their diverse areas of implementation. The chapter covers vital application domains such as transportation, energy management, agriculture and irrigation, healthcare, environment, and waste management. Through the analysis of various research works and case studies, this review explores optimised traffic management, efficient energy consumption, personalised healthcare services, effective environment and waste management strategies, and other intelligent systems in smart cities by application of AI. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects of AI use cases in smart cities are discussed.
