Abstract The traditional smart city approach is characterised by the intelligent use of electronic networks to collect data in order to efficiently manage the functionality, resources and services of urban entities. Climate change, however, sets the boundary conditions for the future governance of urban areas, which have to be accounted for planning processes. Climate-friendly urban planning can play a key role in climate change mitigation and adaptation and has the potential to allow for sustainable development of living conditions for future generations if implemented accordingly. This chapter provides a guideline for the integration of findings from urban climate studies into actual city design. By this, it intends to serve as a basis for a re-evaluation of the term ‘smart city’, which should also involve a longer-term horizon of planning. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
