Abstract Today’s evolution of artificial intelligence provides a variety of optimal solutions for human activity. The major areas of development are healthcare and transportation. Artificial intelligence-embedded solutions provide interaction between human and machine as well as personalized interaction and various services that imitate the behaviour of humans. With the help of cognitive computing, large volumes of data can be managed efficiently, but research in this domain has not yet produced valid results. The problems which have not yet been resolved are scalability and flexibility in respect to data collection over a smart city environment. This chapter analyzes the cognitive internet of things (CIoT) and proposes a smart city network with the enabled features of cognitive computing handling the problems of scalability and flexibility. We have also shared assorted technologies such as artificial intelligence and analysis of big data for the proposed architecture. Challenges and opportunities for this domain are discussed. © 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
