Abstract	Smart sustainable city initiatives play a key role in promoting the circular economy and sustainability. It is, therefore, important that we understand the impact of those initiatives in terms of circular economy objectives. This chapter gives an overview of the current smart city concept and definitions, and of the definitions related to the smart sustainable city and the advantage of the implementation of smart sustainable city instead of the smart city concept. Furthermore, the chapter addresses the impact of smart sustainable city initiatives in promoting sustainability and the circular economy (CE), particularly in the water and waste water-management, waste-management, and energy sectors. A number of use cases are presented of solutions that have been adopted, using technologies such as IoT-enabled devices, artificial intelligence, and blockchain, to enable the transition toward a circular economy and resource efficiency in a smart sustainable city, and the effects of these solutions are discussed. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
