Abstract Creating machine intelligence, especially smart computer programs, is a scientific and engineering business enterprise. Though it is associated with computers being commissioned to recognize human intelligence, artificial intelligence (AI) isn’t constrain to techniques that can be observed biologically in smart cities. Although there is no unanimously recognized definition of AI, it is generally understood as a study of computations that enable perception, reasoning, and actions. The volume of data generated, both by machines and humans, far surpasses human capacity to comprehend, grasp, and make nuanced decisions based on that data. AI serves as the foundation for all machine learning, representing the future of addressing complex decision-making challenges in a smart city environment. This chapter focuses on the characteristics of artificial intelligence as well as its origins, phrases, uses, development, and accomplishments in smart cities. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Uma Maheswari V and Rajanikanth Aluvalu; individual chapters, the contributors.
