Abstract This research examines how cloud and intelligent edge computing are affecting smart city physical environments. This shows how these technologies might transform urban life. Cloud and intelligent edge computing may improve urban life and sustainability. These applications are useful across sectors. Integrating centralized cloud resources with decentralized edge devices makes these applications operational. This technology may make cities more livable and environmentally friendly. This article focuses on how recent technological breakthroughs are affecting transportation, healthcare, energy management, and public safety. The combination of edge and cloud computing makes smart cities feasible and accessible. These cities are efficient, adaptive, and environmentally conscious. The convergence's environment will spur technology and urban innovation, which will change how people live in cities in the future. Additionally, these qualities will create an environment that encourages urban planning and technological innovation. This research examines the benefits of cloud and intelligent edge computing for various enterprises. These technology advances are affecting several industries, including public safety, energy management, transportation, and healthcare. This article devotes a lot of attention to each of these specific areas. This study shows the necessity of communication protocols and standards and how to use them by offering a step-by-step strategy for data collection, analysis, and interpretation. We will focus on message fundamentals and network operation throughout the study. The results show that smart edge and cloud computing in smart cities increase energy efficiency, sustainability, and mobility. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2023.
