Abstract Urbanization's rapid pace and the growing need for smart city technology have given rise to computing at the edge and in the fog paradigms. These paradigms show promise in addressing the problems with processing, storing, and transmission in smart cities. This paper presents a systematic mapping study that aims to comprehensively analyze the body of knowledge on fog and edge calculation in smart cities and towns. Using a methodical methodology, relevant research articles, conference papers, and technical reports from diverse sources are found, classified, and evaluated. The fundamentals of edge and fog computing and its applicability in the setting of nifty cities are first outlined. The systematic mapping study's methodology is then covered, including the search strategy, selection criteria, and data abstraction procedures. The paper's main body is structured into several sections addressing major topics about fog and edge computing in smart communities, such as applications, challenges, architectures, and emerging trends. Key findings are concluded by summarizing and their implications for future research and practice. Overall, this review paper provides insightful information on the state of fog as well as edge computing in smart cities today and emphasizes the need for further research and advancement in this field. © 2024 IEEE.
