Abstract Cities are transitioning to smart cities to achieve a decarbonized society. Energy management that integrates renewable energy (RES) and combined cooling heat and power (CCHP) is being studied with the goal of improving energy use and eliminating carbon emissions. To deal with uncertainty in RES, model predictive control (MPC), which iteratively predicts and optimises to solve the problem, has attracted attention. In addition, cooling and heating tanks are also important components in reducing the required capacity of batteries and improving the flexibility of cooling and heating. This study proposes an optimal MPC-based operation in a smart city with cooling/heating storage and verifies its effectiveness by comparing costs and carbon emissions through simulation. © 2024 IEEE.
