Abstract Mobile cloud computing (MCC) is a crucial component of smart cities, providing ubiquitous access to computational capabilities and data storage that mobile devices do not have. While MCC has numerous advantages, it also raises several security risks. Data breaches, cyber assaults, and privacy concerns can all arise when sensitive data is sent between mobile devices and cloud servers. We investigate the security challenges related to MCC in smart cities and provide viable solutions to these issues in this study. To examine the current state of security in MCC in smart cities, we did a literature analysis of previously published work on the topic and utilized a combination of qualitative and quantitative research approaches. According to the findings of this study, there are various security problems related to the usage of MCC in smart cities, including data breaches, cyber assaults, and privacy concerns. We end by emphasizing the need for additional research in this area and suggesting some potential remedies to the discovered security vulnerabilities. This study gives a thorough analysis of the security challenges connected with MCC in smart cities and lays the groundwork for future research in this vital field. Smart cities have become an increasingly essential component of urban development in recent years, harnessing new technologies to improve inhabitants’ quality of life. MCC has emerged as a vital technology for smart cities, allowing users to access data and apps from anywhere, at any time, and on any device. However, the usage of MCC poses a number of security risks, which can negate the benefits of this technology. We investigate the security challenges connected with the use of MCC in smart cities in this research. We begin by doing a thorough evaluation of previously published work on this topic. We then assess the existing level of security in MCC in smart cities using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Our findings indicate that the usage of MCC in smart cities raises a number of security problems, including data leaks, cyber-attacks, and privacy concerns. The complicated network architecture of smart cities, the vast amount of sensitive data exchanged, and the wide range of mobile devices used to access the cloud are identified as important contributors to these security challenges. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
