Abstract The era of 5G with Internet of Things (IoT) has led off future Internet providing faster and reliable communication by revolutionizing the present Internet scenario. Thereby attracting researchers and educationalist to this field directing toward smart city, smart home, smart health monitoring, and smart vehicles leading to Intelligent Transportation System. For efficient and faster vehicular communication, IoT has proved to be one of the best technologies providing real-time management of data processing dealing with vehicular control on road and traffic management. IoT merged with vehicular communication is Internet of Vehicle (IoV); it provides services for accident detection and avoidance, minimizes traffic congestion, and various application-oriented information transmission services. This work provides an insight to researchers for pursing their research in this field and enhances the vehicular and traffic management, the basics related to applications and work done in IoV along with open challenges and future direction are provided in details. Furthermore, the work also provides several architectural sketches of IoV technology for better understanding of network structure of IoVs. © 2024 Apple Academic Press, Inc.
