Abstract Internet of things (IoT) is steadily increasing its presence across multiple areas. Its impact is very significant in various application areas like agriculture, healthcare, smart cities and other. Also, Machine Learning (ML) on the other side is getting similar attention and has been used in various sectors as a tool, popularly in areas like object detection, traffic prediction, health condition prediction and other. Thus, many studies have been done combining both IoT and ML together to perform specific application – about how to improve the outcome of IoT systems with the use of ML. This paper surveys the use of ML in selected IoT areas, listing various applications and describes what ML approach is used for each of the area and application. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
