Abstract Rapid urbanization during the 21st century comes along with deep challenges and opportunities unparalleled in the quest for sustainable development. Urban planners and policy decision-makers have now begun to look toward data-driven platforms more than ever to ensure the sustainability and liveability of cities in light of increasing expansion of urban areas and population pressures. This paper will provide a general review to explore what role satellite data is playing toward urban planning and development and underline its potential utility in assisting in the attainment of the key objectives of sustainable development. Satellites have a privileged position that can be used to monitor urban sprawl-a concern for most cities across the globe. With high-resolution satellite imagery, urban planners can map urban extents with accuracy, identify trends of spatial development, monitor encroachments into natural habitats, and assess the effectiveness of land-use policies. These capabilities are highly useful in the planning of sustainable urban expansions, preservation of green areas, and reduction of environmental impacts. While congestion remains a general problem in metropolitan cities, it reflects problems related to air quality, energy consumption, and quality of life. Integration of satellite navigation systems with ground-based IoT sensors can deliver current traffic data with the goal of optimizing the flow of traffic. Dynamic traffic management strategies, based on the analysis performed on such data, are aimed at avoiding congestion and promoting ecologically viable means of transportation. Another key sector where satellite data are applied in resource management involves smart cities. Conclusively, satellite observations mingle various Earth observation technologies through which water resources management, energy consumption patterns, and urban heat island developments come into view. This enables the city to optimize the use of resources, promote energy efficiency, and thus be resilient against climate change. In the end, satellite data becomes a key toward sustainable urban development due to the unmatched views it gives for more informed decisions. Integrating satellite-based applications into urban planning frameworks empowers cities to address the complex challenges thrust by urbanization, meet sustainability goals, and foster environments that are liveable, resilient, and advantageous for their citizens. This will be complementary to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and help mitigate global climate change by making sure of a sustainable future on the path of transition toward data-driven urban planning.
