Abstract This paper discusses the role of smart sensors in improving safety at petrol pumps by detecting benzene leakage. Benzene is a dangerous chemical that can cause cancer and health issues, and petrol stations are a major source of benzene emissions. The paper emphasizes the importance of real-Time monitoring and detection of benzene leaks at petrol pumps, proposing a system using an Arduino Uno microcontroller and a GSM SIM 800L module for IoT communication. The system utilizes an MQ-135 gas sensor to detect benzene concentration and sends SMS alerts to a designated phone number if a leak is detected. The study concludes that implementing such systems in smart cities can significantly enhance petrol pump safety and reduce the risk of benzene exposure. © 2023 IEEE.
