Abstract Effective waste management is crucial for sustainable and eco-friendly cities. The study proposed a hybrid optimization approach which combines Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Harmony Search (HS) algorithms to optimize waste collection routes and enhance operational efficiency in sustainable cities. Real-world data platforms such as waste data flow and eurostat were used to evaluate the method by demonstrating its effectiveness in optimizing routes, reducing costs and improving resource allocation with an average accuracy rate of 92.5%. The integration of ACO and HS algorithms enabled waste management authorities to minimize travel distances and enhance operational processes by contributing to improved efficiency and cost reduction. The study also emphasized the potential for further enhancements through the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and real-time data through which offering a practical and efficient solution for waste management optimization and promoting environmental sustainability. © 2023 IEEE.
