Abstract	Smart cities rely heavily on Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to enhance energy distribution, transportation, healthcare, and public safety services. This pervasive connectivity, however, exposes critical infrastructures to a variety of sophisticated cyberattacks. Past incidents demonstrate how ransomware, distributed denial-of-service, and sensor manipulation can undermine essential services and erode citizen trust. This chapter addresses the dual challenge of integrating IoT for urban innovation and implementing robust security frameworks that ensure resilience. It explores major vulnerabilities, relevant standards such as those proposed by NIST and ISO, and emergent solutions like Zero Trust Architecture, blockchain-based data integrity, and AI-driven threat detection. Findings show that a multifaceted, policy-focused approach is crucial for protecting smart city systems. These insights guide municipal leaders, policymakers, and service providers in securing the future of connected urban environments. © 2025, IGI Global Scientific Publishing. All rights reserved.
