Abstract The work explores forward-thinking solution for urban lighting by combining solar-powered LED streetlights with Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology, aimed at creating a sustainable and multifunctional lighting framework for smart cities. As cities worldwide shift towards greener energy and smarter infrastructure the traditional street lighting systems are hindered by high energy demands and limited functionality. VLC uses light to transmit data and it is integrated into the LED streetlight system. This dual-purpose setup enables simultaneous lighting and data transmission expanding the functionality of streetlights beyond basic illumination. Streetlights equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology can gather real-time information on traffic flow, pedestrian activity and environmental factors. This data can be leveraged to fine-tune lighting levels and enhance urban planning efforts. VLC-integrated LED streetlights demonstrate promising improvements in energy efficiency, connectivity and infrastructure adaptability highlighting the system’s potential as a transformative smart city asset. The work explores scalability for widespread VLC adoption in outdoor lighting supporting the global shift toward more sustainable connected urban spaces with good data rate, less Bit Error Rate (BER) and better spectral efficiency. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Optical Society of India 2025.
