Abstract The rapid evolution of mobile communication networks continues to revolutionize industries and societies globally, particularly with the advent of fifth generation (5G) technology. Despite these advancements, the escalating demand for data and the emergence of novel applications highlight the need for even more sophisticated and efficient wireless networks. Over the past two decades, each generation of cellular technology has introduced significant changes in operational attributes, including frequency, technology, and speed. As we transition from the voice-centric 1G to the multimedia capabilities of 3G, and the increased mobility and data rates of 4G, the anticipation for 6G technology is growing. The sixth generation (6G) aims to meet unprecedented demands, offering data rates up to 1 Tbps, massive connectivity, ultra-low latency, and enhanced energy efficiency. This article explores the key features, objectives, and anticipated use cases of 6G technology, including holographic communication, extended reality, smart cities, and telemedicine. Furthermore, it delves into the core technologies driving 6G, such as Terahertz communication, blockchain, massive MIMO, quantum communication, and artificial intelligence. Through comprehensive analysis, this study examines the potential challenges and opportunities associated with the deployment of 6G networks, ultimately aiming to provide a roadmap for future research and development in this transformative field. © 2024 IEEE.
