Abstract IoT lays the foundation for the next new industrial revolution that links the Internet with everyday physical objects. It creates a world-wide network of interconnected things that can exchange information amongst and work together with each other to support new applications such as smart city, intelligent transportation system, and smart grid. With the rapid growth of IoT applications, the communications among IoT devices need to be realized anytime and anywhere, which inevitably consume a large portion of battery energy. On the other hand, it is well known that IoT applications often require energy-constrained devices working for long periods without human intervention after their initial deployments. Without efficient resource allocation and energy management mechanisms to save power, these devices would drain their batteries within short time. Therefore, how to reduce the energy consumption and find new ways of deploying green communications for IoT networks has become a critical challenge. Green IoT envisions the concept of reducing the energy consumption of IoT devices and making the IoT networks sustainable. Taking energy efficiency and energy consumption as key design parameters, the implementation of green IoT technologies will reduce the energy consumed for billions of IoT devices communicating with each other, increase resource utilization efficiency and guarantee the QoS requirements of different services. In recent years, green IoT has attracted intensive research interests from both academic and industry. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
