Abstract Objective: The paper aims to define the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its (potential) application in the context of mobile technologies and modern library development. Additionally, it seeks to provide an overview of the literature on the use of IoT and mobile technologies in libraries, present examples from Croatia, and illustrate the application of this technology through the development of Smart Library NSK – a mobile application by the National and University Library in Zagreb, based on user experiences.. Approach: The first part of the paper describes the concept of the Internet of Things and provides a literature review in the context of libraries and librarianship. The second part presents examples from libraries, with a special focus on the Smart Library NSK. Preliminary user research is presented, along with the development stages of the system and associated mobile application, as well as methods of implementing new technologies in libraries. Results: The IoT and mobile technologies are still not widely adopted in libraries, particularly in Croatia, both in theoretical and practical terms. The example of Smart Library NSK demonstrates that libraries can leverage new technologies not only to create new content and services but also to enhance existing ones. Practical application: This paper could inspire the use of IoT and mobile technologies in libraries in Croatia and worldwide, as it outlines development stages and practical applications based on the NSK example. Social significance: The application of the IoT concept and new technologies enables libraries to connect and integrate with other technologies that form smart cities, while providing users with a personalized library experience. Originality/Value: The paper provides a literature review on the topic of IoT and its application in libraries, contributing to the limited literature on this topic in Croatian. Practical examples and user perspectives can serve as a foundation for the development of new services and concepts in both Croatian and international libraries. © 2025, Hrvatsko Knjiznicarsko Drustvo.
