Abstract The smart cities that have been a dream, today became a reality. To improve performance and further implement smart cities, autonomous vehicles still need to be studied which are the vehicles of tomorrow and allows to deepen the concept of smart cities as well as driver comfort. The circulation of autonomous vehicles in the form of Platoons increases the traffic and minimize energy consumption. In this paper, we detailed a study was made on autonomous vehicles and in particular inter Platoon communication. In addition, we discuss existing communication technologies. We also identify challenges and problems faced by connected autonomous vehicles focused on DSRC and C-V2X, the influence of communication on cooperative autonomous drive systems, and highlight future research directions that should be addressed by the research community. © 2022 IEEE.
