Abstract Waste management is one of the essential components of sustainable development, and nowadays smart cities apply novel technologies to solve this problem. Smart Waste Management Systems (SWMS) employs IoT, big data, and AI to determine the level of waste, pick an efficient route for collection, and enhance matters of recycling. Main use as sensor equipped bin to enable real time tracking, AI derived routing to minimize emission, sorting to enhance recycling, and waste to energy where wastes are converted into sustainable energy forms. They provide tangible improvements in the areas of operation efficiency, environmental protection, including decreased usage of landfill and GH emissions. However, current challenges include data privacy, high costs of infrastructure, interoperability of different systems, and difficulties due to the required cooperation of the public. Smart waste management greatly contributes to the development of sustainable urban environments through the deployment of technology and citizen participation. © 2025 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
