Abstract The concept of a “smart city” has started to gain popularity because it has fundamentally altered how people use technology in urban settings. A wide range of electronic and digital applications, embedded ICTs (information and communication technologies) for administrative settings, ICTs for communication and information in operational systems, ICTs that assist people, and ICTs to enhance information and innovation are by definition the main components of a smart city. The terminology “Internet of Things (IoT)" is defined as a network of interconnected electronic devices that communicate with one another at the same time using wireless technologies. These devices have the ability to exchange, process, and store data. IoT devices are taking over a variety of application domains, including industrial, transportation, military, and smart homes. The term “Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)" refers to the imaginative attempt to create a smart manufacturing ecosystem through the integration of IoT benefits into industrial process management. Additionally, this technology is part of the infrastructure for smart cities that is both maintainable and upgradable, namely in the industrial sector known as the IIoT. Industrial devices are carrying out their functions in the context of IIoT, which aims to improve the production, performance, and maintenance efficiency of industrial activities. IoT is highly diversified, has a limited amount of processing power, and uses a variety of ever-evolving methods that expose them to a range of security risks. City governments use smart city capabilities to strive toward enhancing the quality of life for their citizens. Connectivity is essential for smart city applications, and a variety of new technologies are on the market to enable the increasing number of apps that aim to enhance communal life. City administrators must prioritize a number of issues in addition to dealing with demographic shifts and population increase. They also have to deal with a variety of difficulties, such as expensive operational expenses and infrastructure requirements. Although technology is becoming more and more important in helping local governments achieve their goals, improved coordination with utilities and regulators could hasten the public’s access to smart city services. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, V.
