Abstract	To meet the challenges of the city of tomorrow: efficient service, transport and intelligent mobility, sustainable environment, responsible urbanization and intelligent housing. This has triggered the use of technology as a solution to all these issues and to address them in a smarter way. New technologies, in particular, virtual reality (VR), can play a decisive role in developing different aspects that contribute to making smart sustainable cities. VR is first mentioned as a new paradigm of interaction in which the user is an actor actively participating in the construction of three-dimensional virtual world. A discussion is proposed with particular regard to the characteristics, requirements, and devices of VR. The reconstruction of the real environment in the virtual is then discussed through the aspects of immersion and interaction. The conclusion evokes perspectives for research in the field. © 2019 IEEE.
