Abstract This paper studies the reciprocal contribution of heritage preservation to the “smart city” strategy. The major challenge is to adapt this concept of “smart city” to the specificities of each territory, and to take them into account when designing innovation and integrating digital technology into the urban environment. We conduct an in-depth literature review and a comparative analysis of the methods of integrating heritage into the strategies of smart cities through the study of various examples of cities (Evora, Barcelona, Dubrovnik and Chefchaouen) that have launched projects in this direction, to analyse what digital technology and innovation can do to communicate the city's rich cultural heritage. Fez can borrow one of the successful methods used in these smart cities (self-guided tours, mobile applications, virtual museums, etc.) to increase its attractiveness to residents and tourists. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
