Abstract This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of research trends in the field of green energy for smart cities. Utilizing the Scopus database, 1558 research articles from 2010 to 2024 were analyzed, revealing a significant upward publication trend since 2015. Conference papers dominate the literature, indicating active engagement in academic forums. However, there is a clear need for more comprehensive literature such as books and review articles. Highly cited research papers, prolific authors, countries, journals, keywords, and organizations were identified, highlighting the global distribution of research efforts. India and China emerged as leaders in research output, emphasizing the importance of global collaboration for sustainable urban development. In summary, the present analysis offers significant perspectives to practitioners, academics, and policymakers regarding integrating green energy solutions into smart cities and promoting sustainable urban growth. © 2025 IEEE.
