Abstract These days, the protection of the environment is a challenge for the entire universe. To protect the environment, various tools and technologies are employed. Knowledge is applied through technology to fulfill practical needs. Countries and organizations worldwide have been concentrating on adopting various technical solutions to confront the challenges posed by global warming and ecological imbalance in recent years. Blockchain technology is one weapon that could be very useful in dealing with the global crisis. Public and private organizations have worked together to establish smart cities, which offer effective governance and improved services to reality. Thus, the development of green smart cities can confront several issues that can be resolved via blockchain. The main goal of the green smart city is to enhance various industries and businesses with the aid of advanced technologies for efficient performance, overall cost minimization, and mitigating resource deterioration. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
