Abstract Smart cities epitomize the integration of digital technology with city services and infrastructure, offering a paradigm shift in how these elements are planned, delivered, and managed. Recognizing the potential of digital enablement, government bodies are leveraging it to create platforms for integrated planning, enhanced design, and efficient construction. A pivotal element in this transformative journey is City Information Modelling (CIM), which embodies the digital metamorphosis of both the built and natural environments within urban spaces. A CIM model supplies great connectivity among multi-dimensional and multi-scale data generated from various sectors to achieve informed decision-making in a smart city. This book chapter presents an overview of the technical components of CIM, delineates seven research domains within CIM, each underscoring the multifaceted nature of this field, and addresses the prevailing challenges inherent to the current state of digital maturity in CIM. © 2025 Junhao WuORCID Icon, Feng QiuORCID Icon, Ling MaORCID Icon.
