Abstract Smart and sustainable cities have arisen as an important study area, to address urbanization concerns and improve inhabitants' quality of life. This study examines concepts, approaches, domains, issues, and literature gaps in research on smart and sustainable cities. Using credible bibliometric and clustering methodologies, we investigated major research concerns, publications, authors, and journals from 2013 to 2023. Patterns and common terms were discovered, emphasizing environmental issues and technological applications. However, research on social sustainability is still sparse. As a result, future research should focus on the social components and aspects of well-being in smart and sustainable cities. Furthermore, frameworks that consider the technological and sociological ramifications and effective citizen participation approaches should be developed. This paper emphasizes the significance of incorporating social and human factors and technological breakthroughs into designing and developing smart and sustainable cities. The findings add to existing knowledge and provide useful insights for scholars, policymakers, and urban planners working to advance this notion. © 2023 IEEE.
