Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) is a notion in which smart devices seamlessly integrate with physical and virtual resources. These resources are accessible online and available to anyone to provide value-added information. The rapid advancement of technology has resulted in the creation of various features and capabilities for end-users and applications. Smart devices generate a large amount of data on the Internet of Things (IoT) and aggregate it on various server platforms, which is crucial for data processing, aggregating, and controlling. The accelerated development of technology has led to the creation of various features and capabilities for end-users and applications. Despite its benefits, IoT technology is plagued by several security and privacy concerns that must be addressed to ensure widespread acceptance. The accelerated technological progress has created a multitude of features and capabilities, yet it has also posed substantial challenges. To address this problem, researchers and practitioners have adopted numerous schemes to aggregate data while preserving data privacy. Data privacy is critical to protect against network entities inside the network, data operators, and external eavesdroppers. This survey paper delves into the security and privacy challenges associated with IoT and explores recent solutions, such as APPA, blockchain-enabled IoT, LPDA, EF-IDASC, and two secure privacy-preserving data aggregation schemes - PPLS. Additionally, it outlines several open research challenges and their anticipated solutions. © The Author(s) 2024.
