Abstract This paper explores how IoT technologies are revolutionizing smart tourism with the goal of improving passenger experiences and operational efficiency. Key research trends in the field are identified by utilizing a bibliometric analysis and systematic literature assessment of 83 papers from SCOPUS till December 2023. The combination of technologies like Big data, wearables, AR, VR, cloud computing, ML, AI, and smart sensors is what makes IoT-driven smart tourism so unique. These developments provide unique features including cloud computing for data processing and storage, as well as improved data collection via integrated sensors. Examining several Internet of Things (IoT) applications related to smart tourism, like smart cities, recommender systems, electronic ticketing, and payment methods, highlights how important these applications are to improving security, and customized services. However, other problems - like security, privacy, complicated software, scalability, and compatibility - need strong answers. This study suggests future research directions spanning blockchain integration, edge computing, and improvement of visitor-smart tourism system interactions in addition to strengthening security and privacy protections. These programs seek to solve issues and seize possibilities in the face of an environment that is becoming more and more reliant on technology, all the while encouraging creative responses to the changing needs of the travel and tourist industry. © 2024 IEEE.
