Abstract In the rapidly evolving landscape of modern urbanization, the fusion of innovative concepts like vertical farming with the visionary ideals of smart cities is shaping the trajectory of urban development. This paper explores the transformative potential of vertical farming, an agricultural innovation that addresses the challenges posed by urban growth, sustainability, and enhanced living standards. We delve into the historical roots, technological advancements, and the convergence that has brought vertical farming from theoretical contemplation to practical implementation. The interplay between vertical farming and the smart city concept promises harmonious urban existence that aligns with technological progress, efficient resource use, and holistic well-being. By integrating vertical farming into smart cities, skyscrapers and high-rises can be transformed into thriving green spaces that enhance air quality, reduce heat, and contribute to a healthier urban environment. Through a mixed-methods approach, we identify motivating factors and acceptance influences that drive vertical gardening adoption, revealing its alignment with smart city principles. Our analysis underscores the significance of technology integration and localized food production as key drivers of adoption. The study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the synergy between vertical farming and smart city frameworks, offering insights for sustainable urban development. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
