Abstract In today’s data-rich landscape, the term “big data” encompasses diverse information sources like mobile devices, sensors, and online transactions. Its utilization is crucial, offering substantial advantages across fields, enhancing comprehension, decision-making, efficiency, and fostering innovation. The 3Vs framework – velocity, volume and value – spotlights the rapid, vast, diverse, and valuable nature of these datasets, transforming industries globally, unlocking possibilities and driving innovation in various sectors. Within transportation, big data optimizes vehicle routing, traffic management, logistics, and sustainability. It supports public administration, smart city development, and urban planning by enabling precise decision-making through access to extensive data reservoirs, amplified by cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The study centers on the Naples’ Mobility as a Service (MaaS) project, named “MaaS4Naples”, highlighting big data’s crucial role within this sustainable mobility solution. This project proposes ad ad-hoc App integrating transport modes and ticketing in a unique useful personalized service. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
