Abstract World’s population has increased significantly which impacts every environmental challenge. This is an essential element to achieve sustainability. Currently, cities are demanding 75% of the earth’s resources, and energy causes fatal effects such as depletion of natural resources, degradation of the environment, conflicts and wars, pandemics, and epidemics. Global warming, acid rain, garbage disposal, water pollution and climate change are all issues that affect every human, animal and nation on the earth. It also predicted that 70% of the population will live in urban areas by the year 2050. So, the development of the smart city concept is needed to tackle the issues that have arisen as a result of rapid urbanisation, urban population increase and environmental concerns. Smart solutions using innovative and advanced technologies help to enhance the development of smart cities. Cities become smart and efficient as a result of the key elements of a smart city, such as smart infrastructure, energy, health care services, transportation and smart technology. So, this can be achieved through two evolving technology frameworks such as Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data. Smart mobility is an example of automation in which users receive real-time traffic information along with alternate route ideas in the event of a traffic jam. It helps in communication and exchanging data from real-time operations. It also delivers connected solutions for the public. This chapter will talk about the advantages of smart cities, components and characteristics needed for making the cities smart.
