Abstract The consumer electronics market is flooded with new and smart devices ranging from smart home appliances, smart phones and smart wearables that include smart watches, smart glasses and many more. All these devices are designed to help the users and ease their lifestyle. With the internet-of-things (IoT) advancement, these consumer devices are proliferating rapidly. This puts huge burden on the communication capability, latency requirements, spectrum utilization and network connectivity. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of the emerging communication paradigms of sixth generation (6G) wireless technology. The evolution from first generation (1G) to the fifth generation (5G) is discussed based on the different technology performance criteria. The limitations of 5G and the extended capabilities of 6G are highlighted with innovations like intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs), cell-free communication, holographic beamforming. The role of 6G in the IoT ecosystem is displayed with the convergence of different technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), digital twin, blockchain, edge intelligence. Further, the use case scenarios of 6G IoT convergence in different application domains like smart transportation, smart cities, smart classrooms, smart agriculture and smart manufacturing are discussed. In the end, the challenges and opportunities of 6G in the IoT landscape are discussed. © 2025 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. All rights reserved.
