Abstract With the increase in population of the world, there is a tremendous increase in the amount of waste that is being generated in the world. As governments worldwide aim to develop smart cities, one of the most important aspects of the smart city is solid waste management. Since solid waste is generated daily, so proper management is necessary. A multi-robot system can help increase the efficiency of waste management tasks. In this paper, we propose an efficient approach for waste management in smart cities using IoRT-enabled robots. We have implemented the proposed approach using Webots, an open-source simulator that supports realistic 3D robotic and multi-robotic simulations. We have validated our approach using different numbers of robots and assessing them depending on the time required to complete the execution and the amount of area cleaned. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
