Abstract Contemporarily the increased investment in smart cities represents a transformative approach to urban development. Globally, the smart city concept has been utilised to spearhead improvement in urban living through technological integration; however, in developing countries, the long-term economic implications of smart cities remain understudied. In South Africa, the smart city concept has the potential to address historical legacies of colonialism and apartheid which continue to shape urban landscapes. By contextualising global trends in smart city development, this chapter seeks to provide valuable lessons and recommendations for stakeholders involved in urban planning and development. The chapter outlines an analytical framework that encompasses the economic landscape of the Eastern Seaboard region (ESR), defines the smart city concept within an African context and builds the economic feasibility model of any specific smart city initiatives. Ultimately, this chapter contributes to a deeper understanding of the economic dynamics underlying smart city implementation, offering insights crucial for informed decision-making and sustainable urban development practice. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology and its licensors 2025.
