Abstract An emerging technology called a “digital twin” (DT) invokes complex communication between real-world objects and their virtual representations. The core attention of industry advancements is facilitated along with DT to enforce Industry 4.0 concepts specifically in the manufacturing industry. Digital twin aims to integrate physical data with workloads in virtual machines to enhance real-time applications. Digital twin has a variety of applications that adhere with systematic understanding. The technology of digital twin has already been rooted in areas, such as manufacturing, smart cities, and healthcare. Digital twin not only enhances manufacturing but is also deeply involved in product design, operations, and recycling of the products. The Internet of Things (IoT) is largely coupled with digital twin in order to extract physical entities into virtual models. Digital twin is highly focused on virtual entities and the role of DT models enables technologies in engineering applications. This chapter discusses types and the design of digital twin technology that focus on challenges and applications in various engineering applications. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, A.
