Abstract Recently, there has been a lot of interest in the idea of a “digital twin” from a lot of different fields, including business and academia. This interest has been growing rapidly. The manufacturing sector in particular has been able to grow as a direct result of the developments in ideas brought about by Industry 4.0. This expansion has been made possible by the advent of the fourth industrial revolution. The fluid transfer of information between a physical machine and a virtual machine is the most accurate description of what is meant by the term “digital twin,” which can be found in the fact that it refers to the fluid transfer of information. This article provides an introduction to artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and digital twins, as well as the challenges, applications, and enabling technologies associated with each of these emerging technologies individually. In this piece, recent research on the topic of digital twins is dissected, and the findings are compiled into a systematic review format for the reader’s convenience. In the study, the research topics are put into three different groups based on the industries (manufacturing, healthcare, and smart cities) to which they apply. Following this, a variety of publications that illustrate the current state of the respective fields are discussed. This study looks at the tools that make it possible to create digital twins, as well as the difficulties those tools present and the state of open research in the area at the moment. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, A.
