Abstract Smart cities and smart regions are currently very topical and often discussed topics. Modern technologies are used in the smart cities strategy, primarily intended to improve the quality of life of residents in cities, especially in connection with the security of citizens. These smart technologies focus on efficiently using resources with the least possible financial costs and the highest benefits for residents. However, the insufficiently resolved implementation and fragmentation of Smart Cities strategies do not provide citizens, cities and municipalities with comprehensive information, which also includes possible problems related to the safety of residents. Cities and municipalities understand the Smart Cities strategy differently, which creates inconsistencies in the implementation of Smart Cities, and there is a non-professional integration of Smart Cities in the Czech Republic. It is therefore appropriate that information systems (IS) for Smart Cities be designed in a uniform, coordinated manner from the position of higher territorial self-governing units in the form of IS. These will provide information for citizens, cities and municipalities, which will guarantee a unified, comprehensive integration (implementation) of IS for Smart Cities at the level of regional municipalities, and at the same time, will also contain modern technology/elements for ensuring public order to increase the safety of residents. Therefore, the article’s main goal is to analyse and design the content part of IS, focusing on information technology, IoT and smart applications implemented in Smart Cities. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
