Abstract Smart cities are becoming popular nowadays, and since they generate a large amount of data, they can be used for deep learning well. The purpose of this literature is to present a systematic review of applying deep learning to smart cities based on the articles published from the year 2014 to 2024. The review is mainly focused on how deep learning can be incorporated into smart city scenarios in aspects such as transportation, energy, and the environment. Moreover, the paper discusses the limitations and gaps of deep learning in the context of smart cities and the direction for future studies and development. As a result of internationalization, the large majority of the population of the world tends to live in large urban centres, which leads to various issues like traffic and transportation management, power usage, monitoring the surroundings for security, and others. Therefore, by applying deep learning, which has recently been discussed in the literature as an effective approach for analyzing complex data, the mentioned difficulties can be surpassed to improve the development of the contemporary smart city.
