Abstract A digital twin is an artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and Internet of things (IoT)-based digital representation of a physical object, system, or process. Many industries, including medicine, engineering, transportation, aerospace, smart cities, farming, and industry, can benefit significantly from using digital twins. However, with the rise in cyber-attacks and data breaches, safeguarding digital twins has become a top priority. Researchers have proposed using blockchain technology to increase digital twin security to address these challenges. Secure authentication, data privacy, provenance tracking, distributed data storage, interoperability, and an immutable audit trail are just ways blockchain technology improves digital twins. This chapter discusses the current state of blockchain technology's potential to enhance digital twin security in various industries and the research difficulties that lie ahead. The research highlights many significant hurdles that need to be cleared before blockchain-based solutions for digital twin security can be widely adopted. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology and its licensors 2025.
